Abstract:Industrial production has undergone drastic changes over the past two centuries. The technical, economic and social transformations are analyzed which led to different forms of industrial management. By examining the decentralized and autonomous systems of the industrial revolution through to the centralized, highly specialized and synchronized processes of Taylorism, it is demonstrated finally how manufacturers and their management techniques have evolved into today's flexible workshops. Meanwhile four main types of successive industrial managers are distinguished: the entrepreneur, the organizer, the optimiser and the strategist.
