Abstract:Data are used from a survey of corporate reputations to examine aspects of the relationship between corporate social responsibility and measures of firms financial performance that previous research has ignored. Perhaps the most interesting result is that a firm's prior performance, assessed by both stock-market returns and accounting-based measures, is generally a better predictor of corporate social responsibility than subsequent performance. Accounting-based measures, particularly return on assets, prove to be better predictors than market measures. Although performance tend to predict corporate social responsibility better than risk, measures of risk also explain a significant portion of the variability in responsibility.
