Abstract:The study examines the proposition that multidivisional reorganisation positively affects performance in large corporations regardless of other contingencies. It focuses on developing and testing a contingency perspective in which implementation of such a structure is related to performance under conditions of different diversification strategies. A longitudinal analysis of data is employed because the structural implementation and the relationships occur over time. The implementation of multidivisional control tends to improve rates of return on investment for unrelated-diversified firms. Vertically integrated firms actually demonstrate decreasing rates. Related diversifiers demonstrate decrease, although it is not significiant.
