Abstract:Volvo has had considerable success in work innovations and the dissemination for these approaches throughout its auto and truck facilities. The company was able to respond effectively to the new non-material needs of Swedish workers since 1971. Using newly-configured industrial plants, a flexible working matrix and self-managing teams, the corporation was able to learn from past experience. Personal growth and development also became a systemic thrust designed to initiate new workers into the Volvo system and then help them to develop as contributing associates. Short-term fixes were set aside for long-term strategies. Volvo's success suggests an alternative for Western managers who have been heavily concentrating on the Japanese model.
