Abstract:The predominant source of energy in Ethiopia is woodfuel, the major consumer is the household. A model used to estimate demand for energy in rural and urban parts of the country is developed based on the general household framework of microeconomic theory. After considering the theoretical and econometric theory underlying the model, village level cross sectional data are used. The major findings are that price of traditional energy plays an important role in the consumption of fuelwood and other traditional energy sources, and by manipulating the price variable the government can control the high rate of depletion of forest resources.
