Abstract: | Profitability as a factor of competitiveness is characterized. It is shown how diversification can influence favourably a company's market position. Some theoretical assumptions about diversification are described. The measurement of diversification is also examined. A portfolio analysis of business activities is presented using an appropriate typology. The case of chain-like diversification is analyzed and opposed to the case of constrained diversification. An empirical study of the German mechanical industry (subdivided into 33 branches) is reported. The two types of diversification are compared according to their impact on profitability. It is shown that there are situations where specialization is more favourable. |
