Abstract:Since the end of the cold war, several advanced countries have been suffering from a long economic recession which is expected to result in low, zero or negative economic growth in those countries. Japan, who joined the "advanced countries club" on 22 September 1985, has not been an exception. In the face of this long-term economic recession, a number of Japanese managers, senior or junior, regard it as a trough of a business cycle on the one hand, and indulge in an endless "cost-reduction competition" on the other.
