| Abstract: | PGH Mechanik- a profitable, dynamic production cooperative in the earlier years of the German Democratic Republic. The development of a barely medium-sized East German company producing machinery is described by way of its activities, organization and results. The chronological changes made in the company and its working environment, and the differences from West German companies are examined in detail. Even by western standards the cooperative worked very efficiently. Some of its organizational elements have been confirmed recently by similar solutions in the Japanese industry and other elements, presently not implemented, can lead to futher increases in productivity. The economic policy of the GDR initially supported industrial production cooperatives and these developed well until they were expropriated and nationalized. |
