| Abstract: | By 1998 March Europe's biggest futures exchanges will launch the first contracts to be settled in euros, and only the fittest will survive. The biggest financial centres are locked in combat to win the dominant futures contracts in short-term and medium-term interest rates. Actually the battle will be fought and won this year rather than next. It will be known by 1998 which countries will be joining the first wave of European monetary and economic union; a basket of the "in" currencies, or a synthetic instrument, could be constructed whose behavior will anticipate that of the euro. |
