Abstract:The authors of the article state that managers have two types of responsibility. With respect to their organisations, they are responsible for managing processes, systems, and structures. With respect to people, they are responsible for managing the network of one-on-one relationships within which the vast majority of their work is performed. To be most valuable, any theory for understanding management should treat both aspects. By contrast, this article focuses on people both those who manage and those who are managed - as complex adaptive systems in the context of organisations as complex adaptive systems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to take this approach.
