Abstract:This article deals with the somewhat neglected role of the commercial traveller (hereafter as: c-trav.) in British business history. Especially, it will be shown how, by the early 19th century, c-trav. was well established and displayed elements of 'modernity'. Presented is a reconstruction of the c-trav. by English hardware factor John Shaw from 1810 to 1815.
