Abstract: | This article reviews the rapidly growing literature in the emerging field of small-world networks in social science and management. The review argues that literature in the field is unique due to its distinctively interdisciplinary nature: literature on small worlds combines research not only within the social sciences but also between the social sciences and physical sciences. The paper introduces the methods of this relatively new field and studies the results. Also suggestions for further research are made. The review suggests that small-world literature is exceptionally wide-ranging, and that even though small worlds seem to organize various types of systems in different contexts, they are neither universal nor entirely consistent what it comes to their effect on performance. |
