Abstract:We have the ability to discern complex, layered, and dynamic systems both in nature and in our current industrialized society. Industrial ecology focuses on the sustainability of anthropogenic systems, and the field has allowed identification of different factors causing a lack of sustainability and continues to provide methods for increasing sustainable configurations. Many methodologies and associated tools have been developed, such as artificial life, multiagent systems, and agent-based modeling. This special issue attempts to capture and illustrate complexity and industrial ecology of the highest level.
