Abstract:This article presents a framework that determines the structure, function, and evolution of a regional industrial ecosystem that brings together insights from industrial ecology and economic geography dimensions with complex systems theory. Natural ecosystem functions, economic transactions, policy contexts, and social interactions are all made prominent by the framework. A case study was held in Puerto Rico where the framework was applied, and it disclosed changes in the institutional context of the system, its resource flows, and the composition of its industrial community.
