Abstract: | The article deals with two subjects. First, the relationships among the constructs of complex adaptive systems, systems of systems, and industrial ecology are examined from a methodological perspective. Industrial ecology and system of systems are found to offer complementary frameworks for posing systemic problems in the context of sociotechnical applications, while complexity science provides a set of tools to analyze mechanisms such as evolution and emergence. Second, two tools from complexity sciences are shown to deal with a network transition problem in air transportation with the aid of a stochastic simulation composed of network theory analysis and agent-based modeling. |
