Abstract: | Complex systems often require analysts to use aggregate measures in order to grasp their structure and evolution without being overwhelmed by the complexity. Quantitative measures for input-output analysis have been developed to describe and characterize interindustry interactions used to compare economies. A number of concepts proposed and applied to interindustry systems are reviewed, and then they are applied to a case study of the Australian economy between 1975 and 1999 in terms of environmental headline indicators. The results showed a diversifying economy occurring in addition to a specialization of environmental flows. |
