Abstract:Chicago is the third largest and the fastest growing financial center in the US. About a quarter million people are working in financial services and related fields, the financial system is fully developed. The local economic boom is over, one of the biggest Chicago- based banks, Continental Illinois was badly shaken, and now the LDC debt crisis affects the Big Seven. As a lesson, the banks are deregulated, banks may have retail deposits, they can buy up other banks, even outside of Illinois. Chicago's banks are retrenching internationally and looking to a firmer home base.
