Abstract:Some examples of participatory management are described. At a Chevrolet plant of General Motors, self-managing team plan, schedule and work the assembly line; workers stop it when they see mistakes. However, executives who try to make the transition from a command management to a participatory one may discover obstacles in their way. Despite years of effort to change to management culture, those at the top were unable to see that they were a part of the problem. Guidelines are presented for continuous improvement: setting the strategic direction, managing yourself, managing others and the improvement process. The lessons learned from the GM and National Steel Corp. management cases are analyzed.
