Abstract:This paper contends that competitive advantage for service firms lies in the unique resources and capabilities possessed by the firm. Not all resources or capabilities are a source of competitive advantage - only those that meet the stringent conditions of value, rareness, immobility, and barriers to imitation. The actual sources of competitive advantage are likely to vary depending on the nature of the service, the particular traits of the firm, the nature of the industry, and the country of origin.
