Abstract:In 1989, an automobile factory in Slovenia was taken over by a large French company. As the major capital holder of the plant, the French partner appointed French managers to head 3,000 Slovenians to produce French cars for Western markets. The initial annual production was about 60,000 cars, to be doubled in the following years. The Slovenian plant had to adjust quickly to Western quality standards and, since the French company worked with global quality procedures adapted from Japanese working methods, Slovenian staff had to adopt new working methods and behavior.
