Abstract:Unlike most previous research on the use of information technology in retail environments, this article concentrates on the customers' use of information technology. Using a case research method, the paper investigates the worldwide implementation of certain customer-directed content integration devices at the point of sale, the supporting infrastructures and radio frequency identification technology. The findings of the study indicate that customers will use innovative information technology such as content provision devices at the point of sale. The results also suggest that despite younger customers using innovative information technologies at the point of sale more than elderly people, a hidden user potential exists in all age groups.
