Abstract:A new frame of reference for business administration was developed by a group of Japanese management scholars. Using this framework the concept of compressive management is introduced, which recognizes a key role for middle manager in information development. The core logic of compressive management is that top management creates a vision, whereas middle management creates and implements concrete concepts to solve and transcend the contradictions arising from gaps between the existing and the developing states. The development of the Honda "City" is used to illustrate this new "middle-up-down" management methodology. The characteristics of the inductive (bottom-up), the deductive (top-down) management and their compressive synthesis are described.
