Abstract:Since 1984 about 500.000 managers at more than 300 corporations have lost or left their jobs in the United States. Many corporations make an effort to minimize the trauma that attend the elimination of middle-management positions. However, they often forget that the very purpose of downsizing is to become more productive. There are ways to deal with downsizing that minimize the number of employees who must leave. These include such options as relocations; converting divisions or departments into profit centers;reducing the number of interns,part-time and temporary employees, and consultants; putting managers in charge of new business startups.
