Abstract:The UK market of cheese and the changes that it has undergone in the late 1980s are overviewed. Cheese consumption has been relatively static, although the trade believes there is a considerable room for expansion, due to the low level of consumption compared with other North European countries. Low-fat cheeses and speciality cheeses are two important growth sectors. Volume consumption of all cheeses decreased by 1.5 percent in 1989 while expenditure rose by 4.7 percent, to GBP 1,170 million. UK dairy producers are further threatened by the advent of the European Single Market. Major foreign suppliers in the UK market are diversifying their interests through joint ventures, or intensifying their export. Statistics and tables showing market data and manufacturing are given.
