Abstract:In ruling against a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) challenge to the merger of the two largest hospitals in a three-market community, the U.S. District Court judge in Virginia who wrote "hospital rates are lower, the fewer the number of hospitals in an area", echoed the sentiments of many in the health care arena who have argued that competition and efficiency are antithetical in health care and that we need to throw out the economics textbooks in order to understand hospital economics.
