Abstract:The economic loss discussed in this article can be mainly divided into three parts. The first is the loss caused by air pollution. The loss in human health generated by TSP (and SO2) pollution was estimated as 17.1 billion yuan. In addition, there are indoor pollution, lead pollution, acid rain and the consequent cost for cleaning. The second kind is triggered by water pollution. For example, in areas crisscrossed with rivers, rivulets, lakes and ponds in the South, water pollution has caused a loss of 5.1 billion yuan. In rural areas in the North, the damage from water pollution was 3.05 billion yuan. Industrial economic loss triggered by qualitative shortage of water amounted to 75 billion yuan nationwide. The third is solid waste and other factors. In 1995, industrial solid waste was increased to 1.02 billion tons and the loss was 6.8 billion yuan.
