Abstract:This article evaluates the importance of indirect network effects in the video cassette recorder (VCR) market between 1978 and 1986 in the US. Evaluation reveals the role of networks and the format competition between Beta and VHS. The author of this article found that Sony has an important role as a system sponsor of Beta; if Sony had introduced aggressively VCRs at the early point of competition, Beta would have dominated the markets instead its disappearance in 1989.
