Abstract:According to previous research, men are more engaged as citizens than women. How do women and men define citizenship differently? In this article the importance men and women assign various citizenship rights and responsibilities is examined using 2004 ISSP data from 18 Western industrialized nations. Political, civil and social rights and responsibilities are examined by using a disaggregated approach to understand definitions of citizenship. The results suggest that men and women are not different in their views refarding the importance of political responsibilities. Women do, however, view political rights, civil and social responsibilities and rights domains as more important than men.
