Abstract: | This paper compares plural form chains (henceforth as: p-f-chs.), that is, chains with franchised units and company-owned units co-existing, in terms of performance and efficiency, to predominantly franchized chains and predominantly company-owned ones. In order to assess the efficiency of hotel chains in the French market, the data envelopment analysis (DEA) is implemented. It is shown that p-f-chs. have a significantly higher average efficiency score than predominantly franchized and company-owned ones have. Managerial implications are drawn for hotel chains management. |
