Abstract: | This study aims at examining the viability of strategic postures of technological differentiation based on data from 1.054 samples across 32 industries in 30 countries from 2001 to 2002 when global economies were suffering an economic downturn (here as: econ-dwn). It is shown that differentiation-oriented firms underperformed efficiency-oriented ones during the period. However, in the face of deteriorating market conditions, a strategic orientation toward technological differentiation, in accordance with an internal commitment to R&D investment or alike, yields better performance. Finally, it is found that firms with tight coupling btw. differentiation and efficiency defeat those with a pure strategy or with no strategy during an econ-dwn. |
