Abstract:The paper examines the process of interim CEO succession, which is defined as a situation where the company designates a person as a temporary CEO, until a permanent successor is appointed. This is a common case in many public companies in the United States. It is predicted that the employment of interim CEO succession will result in lowered firm performance. This prediction is supported by the research data comprising over 2600 U.S. firms. If the interim CEO also serves as a chairman, however, this moderates the effect of interim CEO succession on firm performance and long term survival.
