Abstract:Based on the resource-based view (RBV) and competitive dynamics literatures, it is proposed that considering resources or actions independently offers an incomplete understanding of the superiour performance (hereafter as: sup-perf.) drivers. Instead, the resources are hypothesized to enable competitive actions. Once these actions leverage the firm's resources, sup-perf. results. These hypotheses are tested based on panelized data on the technological resources and competitive actions of firms in the in-vitro medical diagnostic substance manufacturing industry. There is substantial support found for this paper's hypotheses, specifically as to mediation. It is underscored how the integration of the competitive dynamics and RBV literatures can notably improve the understanding of firm performance.
