Abstract:This paper considers audiovisual and performing arts activities during a ten year period (1981-1992) in France and in Great Britain. Full time employment decreased in France, while it increased in Great Britain with, during the same period, a considerable growth of self-employment. This paper explores different hypotheses for explaining such a divergence. It concedes that the strategies of organisations, and especially the rising number of adhocracies (according to Mintzberg's typology) rather the choices of workers trying to optimise their earnings were responsible. Public policies played also a central role. In Great Britain the Enterprise Allowance Scheme, and in France, the specific Social Security benefit for artists contributed to the increase in self employment in the first case, and in temporary employment in the other case.
