Abstract: | The article presents a general equilibrium model of search unemployment that incorporates absence from work as a distinct labor force state. Random shocks affect the value of leisure that determines, in turn, the absenteeism. Only the workers know their value of leisure. While firms' objective is to maximize profits, they take into account that their compensation system may influence on the queue of job applicants. The paper discusses the impacts of social insurance benefits and other determinants of workers' and firms' behavior. Externalities related to firm-provided sick pay are identified and welfare implications of alternative policies are investigated in the normative analysis. |
