Abstract:In this paper the authors consider the influence of two measures of external exchange rate variability of the euro area and of the US on two key labour market indicators: (i) (changes in) unemployment rates, and (ii) employment growth. These are the two politically most important variables of the indicators linked to popular explanations of the impact of financial volatility on the real sector. This contribution is more an essay than a piece of definitive research. The aim of the paper is not to establish definitely that exchange rate variability causes unemployment. However, it puts in doubt the prior held by most economists that exchange rate variability does not have any real impact. The outline of the paper is as follows.
