Abstract: | While the dramatic transition from the centrally cotrolled economy to market economy causes tremendous tensions in the political elite of Russia, the governments of other republics in the Commonwealth of the Independent States (CIS), the majority of which consists of old Communist Party leaders, seem to be surprisingly stabile. The article examines the position of the political leadership of the new countries, considers the challenges they must face, and assesses their chances to survive. The focus of the investigation is on Russia, where the political future of President Jelzin is a crucial element of the transition. |
