Abstract:The author of the article considers the farm trade and problems of reforming it. He states that because the agricultural sector is so highly politicized for both farmer and consumers, few governments have summoned the political courage to resist becoming active players in the farm sector and that the road to successfully concluding a new agreement on agricultural trade will be long and bumpy. The differences dividing the EU, Japan and the United States over farm trade reform arc not trivial. Add to this sticky mix the concerns of developing countries for whom farming represents a significant sector of employment, and one begins to understand the quagmire that is international trade in agriculture. The paper also provides a substantial list of references on this subject.
