Abstract:New data on the production (hereafter as: prod.) and use of IT around the world to assess the impact of changes in IT prod. in the 1990s on economic development is analyzed. There is empirical evidence provided on a fundamental question: Besides the direct effect on GDP, does an emphasis on IT prod. have a spillover effect on the level of IT diffusion? The results of this paper's diffusion model indicates that the correlation btw. prod. of IT goods and use of goods is confined to specific scenarios and, in the case of developing economies (here as: dev-econs.) , may have a substitution effect. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that the experiences of dev-econs. as to prod. of IT may not include the same demand stimulation effect that has been enjoyed in developed economies.
