Abstract:This article examines the assumption that politicians with left-wing ideology are in favour of higher public expenditure. The author finds evidence of this assumption from a panel of large fiscal adjustments in OECD countries during the last 40 years. The left tends to reduce the deficit by raising tax revenues while the right relies mostly on spending cuts.
