Abstract:The introduction of transgenic technology is argued to have a wide range of implications for farmers in developing nations. The dataset consists of interviews conducted in Brazil, North America, Europe and China. It is found that the impact of impact of new transgenic technology varies. In Brazil, there are great differences between farmer's path dependencies and absorptive capacities. It seems that the technology has negative implications for less-educated subsistence farmers. The social and ethical issues must be considered before attempting to introduce transgenic technology. Finally, the study discusses implications for policy makers, multinationals and small-scale farmers.
