Abstract:Contributing to the debate on value change, this paper advances a new explanation of the relationship btw. political parties and generational-based values in advanced industrialized nations. Using multivariate analysis of World Values and other survey data from 29 countries, it is shown that the relationship btw. generations and values tends to vary btw. polities dominated by major parties and those with many parties achieving electoral success. Green parties enhance the uptake of postmaterialist values and speed the decline of materialist ones, especially among younger generations, by promoting a political discourse and agenda contributing to the formative experiences supporting value change. It is suggested that there is the need for institutional structures and political parties to be given much greater prominence in the postmaterial value change theories.
