Abstract:A scheme designed to help staff at Wakefield council balance their work and home responsibilities includes up to fifteen days' extra paid leave a year to care for dependent children or relatives. Sally Bigwood describes how the new policy works. The scheme helps the council to retain staff, improve morale and compete in the skills market. Employees stated that they preferred to care for their children or relatives themselves and over sixty percent of parents reported problems caring for children who were ill.
