Abstract:This article approaches the question of research and development (hereafter as R&D) activities from a perspective of a peripheral region. The particular case analyzed was manufacturing firms in the North East region of United Kingdom, whose R&D initiatives and R&D co-operation are examined. An analysis of the questionnaires clearly indicates that R&D active firms operate in the periphery's vital areas. The results highlight the R&D active firms' low level of co-operation.
