Abstract:The genetic modification of cultivated plants may be the key to reducing the poverty in the rural areas of developing countries. However, the previous studies have not paid attention its production risk properties. In this study, the authors use smallholder cotton production in South-Africa as a case study to estimate the output risk aspects. The stochastic dominance analysis and stochastic technology estimation of a three-year farm-level data revels that involving new technology the risk increases but output performance is still better than the conventional way of cotton growing.
