Abstract:Due to the lack of consensus of opinion on the conceptualization, identification of innovation in service (henceforth as: srv./srvs.) firms is problematic. Both distinctive features of innovation in srvs. and distinctive types of srv. innovation are suggested by recent papers. These findings are reviewed and evaluated from a Schumpeterian perspective. In spite of the simultaneity of production and consumption in srvs., it is argued that the distinction btw. product innovation and process innovation should be preferred to other ways of classifying innovation in srv. firms. Finally, changes in the srvs.' denomination are advanced as a key to the identification of development and innovation in srv. firms.
