Abstract:Analysis of data yields evidence that young unemployed job seekers choose higher levels of search effort and lower reservation wages than do comparable employed job seekers. These differences in search choices partly explain differences in search outcomes between the two groups: unemployed searchers are more likely than employed searchers to gain new employment, and the wages they obtain are slightly lower. It is argued that the greater effort by unemployed searchers is due to the higher costs of search they bear because of foregone earnings.
