Abstract: | The impact that receipt of unemployment benefit has on job search effort was investigated. It was found that the provision of unemployment benefits facilitates the job-matching process by enabling unemployed workers to finance their job search activities more readily. Non-claimants are less attached to the labour market and benefits can improve job-matching efficiency by improving job search productivity. The claimants search more extensively, thereby increasing the rate of job offer arrival. Receipt of unemployment benefit increases the likelihood of contacting a job vacancy. In the study data drawn from the 1984 Labour Force Survey was used. |
