Abstract: | It is suggested in the traditional trade theory that emerging and developing countries specialize in lower-tech industries. This article takes a dynamic view on development and trade integration and distinguishes three types of catching-up processes: 1) the continuous-convergence approach, 2) the climbing-up-the-ladder approach and 3) the jumping-up approach. The authors empirically analyze the different patterns of catching up using data for 25 countries and 32 industries over the period from 1981 to 1997. |
