Abstract:Based on the text of the 2003 Hugh Kay Memorial Lecture, this paper draws on the author's wide experience to argue and illustrate that business has key role to play in development, but it has to be done in partnership with other sections of society. Building the trust allowing such partnerships to work depends on great openness, being open about objectives and reporting openly on progress. An essential enabling factor is the development of sound governance systems, both locally and globally where appropriate, which allow the input of the various sectors of society and which provide the frameworks, regulatory and otherwise, in which the market can work effectively. In this way business can contribute to development in the interest of society.
