Abstract:As industry in the USA copes with the recesssion, chief executives reintroduced the remedy of the 1980s: downsizing. Downsizing has seriously eroded the loyalty of USA workers. Calling for a new kind of corporate culture, it is described how the furniture industry's two leading performers, Herman Miller Inc. and Steelcase Inc. have balanced the needs of employers and employees. The trends, captured by these companies - today is toward creating corporate cultures in which cooperation is in everyone's best interest.
